1. Select the environment.
2. Select the durability requirements.
3. Select the System.

 

The ISO 12944-5:2007 describes the types of paint and paint system commonly used for the protection of steel structures. It also provides guidance for the selection of paint systems available for different environments and different surface preparation grades, and the durability grade to be expected. The durability of paint systems is classified in terms of low, medium and high.

1. Select the Environment

C3 Urban and industrial atmospheres
Moderate sulphur dioxide levels
Production areas with high humidity
C4 Industrial and coastal
Chemical processing plants
C5-I Industrial areas with high humidity and aggressive atmospheres
CS-M Marine, offshore, esturaries, coastal areas with high salinity

 

2. Select the Durability

How long does the protection coating need to last before any maintenance is required?
Consideration could be given to how readily accessible the protected area is.
